Electronic cigarettes are becoming the latest trend with traditional cigarette smokers. It offers up a healthier alternative since it is tobacco free and contains fewer toxins.
The University of Guam (UOG) is known to be a tobacco free campus. However, the stress of being a college student can be overwhelming. Sometimes the only way to alleviate the stress is to spark a cigarette and smoke it. Since UOG has a strict policy against smoking, this can lead to even more frustration.
Luckily, there has been a new invention that has created quite a buzz lately. Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, have found its way to the UOG campus. It seems to quickly be replacing traditional cigarettes. Why you may ask?
First of all, e-cigarettes are manufactured differently from traditional cigarettes. The e-cigarette has three main parts: a rechargeable battery, an atomizer, and a cartridge. The most important part of the e-cigarette is the battery. It connects to the atomizer, which acts as a heating component for the vapor. What makes the e-cigarette so appealing is the cartridge and what’s inside of it.
The e-cigarette’s cartridge contains nicotine liquid instead of tobacco from traditional cigarettes. Though nicotine and tobacco are both found in traditional cigarettes, the effects are distinctively different. Tobacco that is in traditional cigarettes is the leading cause of cancer, while nicotine is the reason consumers stay addicted.
The nicotine liquid that is in the e-cigarette’s cartridge has a mixture of propylene glycol (PG). vegetable glycerin (VG), food flavoring, and nicotine.
“I like e-cigarettes because tar doesn’t accumulate in my lungs anymore.” said UOG student, Ronnie Deseo. Deseo has been smoking since he turned 18 years old. “I’m never going back to regular cigarettes again.” Deseo confidently added.
